What to Bring When Staying at a Rental or AirBnB

08/05/201508/05/2015

When you walk through the door of your adorable AirBnB rental, you never know what you may find. The photos might have looked perfect online, but anything can look perfect with the help of Photoshop. There are a few things you can bring to spruce up your rental and help it feel more like home.

What to Bring When Staying at a Rental or Air BnB // Twin Stripe

When planning vacations, Chad and I often times will rent a condo or guest house through Airbnb instead of staying at a traditional hotel. We love staying in neighborhoods because you can live like a local while on vacation. For example, when we visited LA last year, we stayed in a guest house in Los Feliz. We were a quick walk away from shops, restaurants and bars in trendy Silver Lake. While our experiences with AirBnB have been positive, at times we have been surprised by the lack of amenities included. Here are a few things we recommend bringing on your next vacation.

Kitchen – Chad and I don’t do a lot cooking on vacation, but we like to put together simple breakfasts and lunches when traveling. Bringing a few extra items with us would have made things easier and save a little extra money.

  • saran wrap
  • ziplock bags/containers
  • chip clips
  • dish soap
  • sponge
  • coffee/tea
  • snacks
  • water

Paper Goods – Recently, our condo only came with one roll of toilet paper. We ran right to the store to pick up more because we didn’t want to risk running out. Having plenty of paper goods on vacation is key.

  • paper towels
  • napkins
  • paper plates
  • toilet paper
  • tissue

Bathroom – They might have soap and shampoo at a hotel, but you are typically on your own when you rent a condo.

  • toiletries
  • hair dryer
  • hand soap

I also highly recommend bringing a travel candle or picking up some flowers to spruce up a rental. It makes it feel more like home. Of course you can pick most of these items up in a local grocery or drug store, but if you are in a large city or at the beach, many of these items will cost more. Plus, putting an extra roll or two of toilet paper in your suitcase doesn’t take much space up at all.

Have you ever used AirBnB or another similar service? What have you found are must brings for rentals?

Travel Month 2015

08/03/201508/05/2015

Travel Month 2015 // Twin Stripe

Happy August, friends! It’s one of my favorite months on the blog: travel month. I have a some exciting posts lined up that are sure to inspire wanderlust. Get ready to be transported to new and exciting locations and maybe even book your next vacation.

Last year I shared my travel bucket list and today I want to share a few a of my favorite travel destinations for you to add to your bucket list.
  • African Safari – My family visited Kenya six years ago for a safari. Watching lions, elephants and giraffes (to name a few) in the wild is simply amazing. I highly recommend adding a visit to Africa to your bucket list.
  • Bahamas – The sparkling, blue water around the islands is shallow, so it is easy to sit back and relax in the ocean. Instead of planning a trip to Nassau and the Atlantis, select a different island with less tourism so you enjoy the Bahama’s true beauty and can truly relax.
  • Barcelona, Spain – Chad and I visited Barcelona on our honeymoon and feel in love with the colorful Catalonia city. There is something for everyone there: great art (Park Güell, Picasso Museum), beautiful beaches, and delicious food and wine.
  • Burlington, VT – If you are looking for a mountain getaway, be sure to check out Burlington and the surrounding area. We rented a condo there many years ago and had a great time. One of my favorite activities was the alpine slide!
  • San Diego, CA – The weather is always perfect in beautiful San Diego. You can easily spend days in Balboa Park visiting museums, the zoo and attending cultural events. If that’s not your speed, there are plenty of beaches, too.
  • Tuscany, Italy – This is easily my favorite destination on the list. I studied abroad in Florence and fell in love with the region. There are so many small villages to discover, art to see and wine to drink that it is a must visit on my list.
  • Washington, DC – There is nothing I like more than walking down the National Mall and taking in our nation’s bustling capital. While the amazing restaurants might be pricey, there are many budget friendly attractions. I recommend visiting the Smithsonian to see Julia Child’s kitchen or take a White House tour and learn how the Obama’s really live.

What are you favorite travel destinations? What do you suggest I add to my bucket list?

Home Tour: Cozy Living Room

07/31/201507/31/2015

Home Tour - Living Room - Bar Cart // Twin Stripe

It’s Friday, which means it’s time to share another room on our home tour! Today I am featuring our living room, a room Chad and I spend a lot of time in enjoying a cocktail, reading a book or watching the latest show on Netflix.

I’m still loving our large tribal patterned area rug designed by Alyson Fox for West Elm. The rug has inspired a color palette of blue, red and neutrals in the room. The large picture window that looks onto our front yard and the two smaller windows make the room bright and airy.

Color Trend with Hallmark Signature: Sunshine Yellow

07/29/201507/31/2015

Color Trend with Hallmark Signature: Sunshine Yellow // Twin Sripe

A big thanks to Hallmark Signature for providing me with the fun greeting cards!

I consider my signature style classic with a twist. I’m not afraid of bright colors or eclectic pieces, but when in doubt, I turn to the classics. Writing notes to friends and family fits in with my definition of classic style and, lucky for me, Hallmark has a wonderful new line of cards that will fit anyone’s style. I was recently inspired by two bright and cheery cards from the Hallmark Signature Collection. Both cards, the 3D geometric and the “Hello Beautiful,” have pops of sunshine yellow, which inspired July’s color trend.

Clockwise from top left:  Yellow Tassel Necklace, Made by MarKa  |  Peony Bottle Print, Betty Hatchett for Minted  |  Bye Bye Pores Pressed Poreless Finishing Powder, It Cosmetics  |  Zebra Crossing Scarf, Tuckernuck  |  Archipelago Botanicals Initial Candle, Nordstrom (on sale!)  |  I Pineapple Summer Keychain, Sucre Shop  |  Turkish Towel, Hattan Home  |  Rorschach Notebook, Rifle Paper Co.

The yellow tassel necklace would be a great piece to add to my wardrobe; the wooden beads give it a classic look while the yellow tassel brightens it up. Lately, I have been going crazy for Bye Bye Pores Pressed Poreless Finishing from It Cosmetics. It is long lasting and works all day, even in the July heat and humidity. All of these sunshine yellow pieces are a great way to keep summer around a little longer as it quickly draws to a close.

What’s your #signaturestyle?
