Bison Bands: Interview and Giveaway

Brittany Ison is a great friend I met this year through Elon’s iMedia program. She makes Bison Bands, beautiful headbands that stay put. She also created a killer Shopify -based website to sell her goods. I have loved wearing my Bison Band and was happy when Brittany agreed to answer a couple questions about her company and inspiration.

How did Bison Bands come about?
I was tired of paying for expensive headbands that I knew I could make myself. Once I started making a couple and wearing them, my friends wanted to wear them too. I made headbands for them and realized that creating Bison Bands could turn into more than a hobby. Over time, I swindled my mother’s old sewing machine, purchased cutting mat and rotary cutter and started collecting endless yards of fabric.

Where did the name Bison Bands come from?
Ever since the 5th grade I’ve been called “Bison” as a nickname (my first name is Brittany and my last name is Ison). I learned to embrace it and by the time I was in college that is what all of my friends called me. Once I started making headbands the name was basically a no-brainer.

Where do you draw inspiration from?
My mother inspired me to create Bison Bands. She taught me to sew when I was very young. She is the one that said “you can do that” as I was buying another $20 fabric headband. In terms of business models, I draw inspiration from businesses like Toms. Bison Bands actually donates a portion of the proceeds to Alzheimer’s research. I also draw inspiration from businesses like Vera Bradley, I think that they prove that well designed prints and simple products can be successful and appeal to a mass audience.

I’ve really enjoyed being able to make decisions and be a part of all aspects of the business. From production, to finances, to marketing – I’ve enjoyed doing it all.

What’s next for Bison Bands?
A new batch of Bison Bands are in the middle of production and they are more vintage inspired. Bison Bands are available in a few of stores already, so I hope to expand by offering them in several more stores and increase online sales with the new website. Long-term, I would definitely love to design my own fabric.

Here’s the good news… Brittany was kind of enough to provide a Bison Band for a giveaway! Just leave a comment on this post telling us which Bison Band is your favorite to entered. For extra entries, go follow and like Bison Bands on Twitter and Facebook. Leave one comment with all of the information. The giveaway closes Friday, July 6th and we’ll announce the winner the following Monday.

  1. It was so difficult to choose a favorite Bison Band. But I think I will have to go with the Sally headband. It is perfect for summer and the beach 🙂
