Easter Cascarónes

Easter Cascarónes When I was in eighth grade, I convinced my parents to let me go on a Spanish class trip to San Antonio, TX. One of my fondest memories of the trip is discovering cascarónes in the market. Cascarónes are decorated eggs filled with confetti. My friend Courtney and I bought a bunch and had fun cracking them over our heads. (What can I say, we were very sophisticated!) I just learned that breaking a cascarón over one’s head will bring good luck.

Cascarónes suppliesOver the weekend I revisited my class trip by making my own cascarónes, which I plan to place on my Easter table along with my glitter bunny from last year. They are easy to make and a colorful addition to an Easter table.

Cascarónes with confettiSupplies

  • Drained and washed egg shells
  • Eye dye
  • Tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Before you can make cascarónes, you need to carefully crack the top of each egg and drain the content. (Tip: Make your Easter quiche with the eggs.) Use a small knife to carefully crack each egg. Drain, rinse and clean each shell. Next, I dyed the shells using PAAS egg dye. Let them dry completely, you do not want your confetti to get damp when you fill the eggs.

Easter cascarones with flowersFor a pretty Easter setting, place one cascarón on each plate or create a center piece in the middle of the table with the eggs and fresh flowers.

How are you planning to celebrate Easter? Do you have any favorite brunch recipes?

Planted Present DIY

planted present diyFor the past few months I have been working to fill my home with lush green plants. I don’t always have a green thumb, but I enjoy learning about plants and the best ways to care for them. A few weeks ago I was brainstorming birthday gift ideas for a friend and decided a new plant to brighten up her office would be the perfect present. I went to a local greenhouse and selected a low-maintenance zebra plant. I loved the plant, but wanted to dress it up a bit and came up with this simple planted present DIY.

happy birthday buntingSupplies

  • House plant
  • Terracotta pot
  • Spray paint
  • Washi tape
  • Wooden skewers
  • Twine
  • Fine point Sharpie

Right away I decided to ditch the plastic pot the plant came in and transfer it to a terracotta pot. I spray painted it gold to make it extra fun. To make the bunting banner, I used a pair of scissors to score the skewers so the twine would stay in place. I then knotted the twine around the skewers. To make the flags, I carefully folded the washi tape over the twine and cut off the excess to make little triangles. Once I had enough flags to complete my message, I used a Sharpie to carefully write “Happy Birthday.” I secured the skewers in the dirt and my planted present was ready to give.

Dipped Nightstand

I few weeks ago I posted about how Chad and I were planning to decorate our bedroom. We had selected out a few pieces of furniture and decor, but were having trouble finding perfect nightstands in our price range. A few days before we made a trip to Ikea, I stumbled upon this DIY hack from Emily of The Sweet Beast. I have been loving the “dipped” look and was excited to try it myself. After much deliberation, Chad and I decided to try and dip the Hemnes nightstand.

We are very happy with the results, but this DIY does take a good amount of time and many coats of paint! I recommend following Emily’s instructions for the best results.

Step 1: Layout all pieces of the nightstand. Use painters tape to mark off the area you do not want to paint to achieve the dipped look. I used a ruler to make sure that the tape was even on each leg. I also wiped down the pieces before I began to paint to remove excess dust and dirt.

Step 2: I then primed the furniture. I used the recommend Zinsser Oil-Based Cover Stain and let it dry. Be sure to watch for drips, otherwise you will be doing a lot of sanding before you begin to paint.

Step 3: Once the cover stain was dry, we began to to paint the nightstand with Valspar’s Tropical Blossom latex paint. After the second coat was dry, we assembled the nightstands and removed the painters tape. I highly recommend wiping down the constructed piece before moving to step 4.

Step 4: To finish the nightstands, we applied a coat of clear polycrylic. Once it dried for 24-hours, we were finally able to use our cheery coral nightstands!

DIY Dip Dye

Speaking of trends, I jumped on the dip dye bandwagon! I have had a cute DIY Dip Dyed stool from HGTV pinned for what seems like forever. This past weekend I made my Pinterest-inspired dreams come true.

dip dye chairOne of my best friends, Kesson, just moved to a new apartment in DC. Her new place is great, but while I was visiting, I noticed that her Ikea chairs could use a little personality. So, Kesson and I headed to the paint store. We went with red because it’s her favorite color and she has a lot of great red statement pieces in her place already.

red This DIY is super easy, all you need is a little paint, a brush and some painter’s tape. (I got made fun of for using the acronym ”DIY” too much — that’s what I get for being a craft nerd!)

I really like the way the chairs turned out and I hope Kesson does too.  The effect was a subtle since we only painted about 3 inches from the base of the chair, but it definitely did the trick personality-wise. It was really fun to actually re-create something from Pinterest. Does anyone have any DIY projects planned for the weekend?

Instagram Photo Board DIY

When Alison moved to Philadelphia, I wanted to create something special for her, similar to the inspiration string she made. Some of my favorite images from our time together are housed on Instagram. I had recently stumbled across Kanvess, a company that prints your Instagrams, and thought this was the perfect way to test out the service. I quickly ordered 20 prints from the site. In a matter of days, a little orange envelope filled with perfect 3″ x 3″ Instagrams arrived in my mailbox.

Now I had to figure out what I was going to do with all of the prints I ordered. Since I had multiple photos for Alison, I wanted to give her the flexibility to change out out the images. And so the Instagram photo board was born.

Materials

  • Instagram photos from Kanvess
  • 12″ x 4″ Birch plywood (found at Michaels)
  • 2 colors of spray paint
  • Painters tape (or washi tape)
  • Mini clothes pins
  • Glue gun/superglue
  • Glitter (optional)
To create a photo board with a stripe, first spray a stripe of pink paint at the top of the board. Once the stripe is dry, cover it with tape. Next, spray the entire front of the board gold. (I found I needed 2-3 coats of the metallic paint.) Next spray paint the mini clothes pins and sprinkle glitter on them. (I secured the pins to cardstock, like Ez of Create Comforts did in this post.) Once everything is dry, glue the pins on to the board, making sure you leave enough space for each Instagram photo. Wait for the pins to dry and then hang your favorite Instagrams on the board.

I drilled a hole at the top of my board and hung it on the wall, but it works just as well to prop it up. Now you have a great way to display your favorite memories! Want more Instagram inspiration? Check out Melanie Blogget’s 13 Clever Things to do With Your Instagrams.
