Bowerbirds – The Clearing

We hope you have fun weekend plans ahead! Katie and I are headed to Wilmington, NC this weekend for a Twin Stripe feature shoot and to visit with my family. I grew up in Wilmington and visit often, so I’m making sure we hit all of my favorite places – most of which include food. You can follow our “tour de food” on Instagram this weekend, but we’ll also post photos on Monday. Our usernames are below, but if you don’t have the app, you can check us here and here.

Since we need some good music for the road, I checked out The Clearing, the new Bowerbirds album. I have been fortunate enough to see Bowerbirds live a couple of times, including at the inaugural Hopscotch Music Festival in 2010 and at the new Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw. I love the juxtaposition of Phil Moore and Beth Tacular’s voices throughout the album. Interestingly, part of The Clearing was recorded in Bon Iver’s famous Wisconsin studio. They definitely captured some of that ethereal sound. I would have to say my favorite song so far is This Year, although that could change with a more couple listens, because as a whole, The Clearing is a really beautiful album.

The Clearing will be released on March 6, but you can stream the full album on Stereogum now. If you’re in the Triangle area, they play one of my favorite venues, Cat’s Cradle, on March 17th
