Joy Deagdeelert Cho of the blog Oh Joy!, has been one of my favorite bloggers for years. Her sweet and spunky design aesthetic has me returning to her site daily to see her latest food and fashion picks. When she announced her latest book, Blog, Inc, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it! I recently finished the book and wanted to share my thoughts with all of you.
One of my favorite things about the book was interviews with different bloggers. It introduced me to bloggers I was unfamiliar with and their success stories. I did feel that many of the bloggers she chose to interview were over night success stories or already had connections to the blogging world, which is not always realistic. As Alison and I continue to build and grow our community, I hoped there would be some helpful tips to aid with that, but I found most of them fairly basic. I felt like her community tips would be more helpful for a blogger just starting off.
The information Joy provides about making your blog a business was the most helpful. She give you a basic outline of a business plan, which is something I would like to put in place in the future. Joy delves into legal issues and finances, which is a great base when you don’t have a business background. There is also a whole chapter about monetizing your blog, which I found extremely helpful. While Twin Stripe may not be ready for sponsors yet, the book included good information about when to start a sponsor program and how to put together a media kit.
I highly suggest this book to anyone who is thinking of starting or recently started a blog. It is also great reference for bloggers that want to take the leap forward into making their blog a business.
Has anyone else picked up Blog, Inc. yet? What did you think? Joy just announced that she will be giving away a few signed copies of her book and participating in a virtual chat on November 15!
