DIY Merry & Bright Advent Calendar

DIY Merry & Bright Advent Calendar // Twin Stripe

As a kid, I could not wait to open the little door on the advent calendar each and every night. I loved the Santa shaped piece of chocolate or miniature ornament that awaited us each day, but best of all, it was a countdown to Christmas! Chad and I haven’t used an  advent calendar in a long time, so we decided to make our own. Keep reading for a merry and bright take on an advent calendar!

Decorating 25 individual bags can take sometime, so grab your family and get to work over the Thanksgiving holiday. It is a great way to spend time together and kickoff the holiday season!

  • 25 small bags or boxes
  • Adornments: washi tape, paper, pom poms, ribbon, ornaments, etc.
  • Download and print Advent calendar triangle numbers
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Twine
  • Wooden dowel
  • Acrylic paint

First, decorate your bags and boxes. I grabbed a variety of craft supplies – colored paper, washi tape, ribbon – so all of your bags can look different. Chad and I decided to mix it up and use bright colors instead of traditional Christmas colors. When we finished decorating, I glued the appropriate number on each bag.

When the bags were completely dry and decorated, I punched holes in the top. I ran apiece of twine through the hole(s) and secured them. When everything was ready to go, we hung the advent bags down at different heights for easy access.

Now, it is time to fill each bag. You could put a little candy treat or toy in each bag, but Chad and I are working to fill the bag with little ways for us to spend extra time together during the holiday season. Here are a few examples:

  • Weekend walk to the coffee shop.
  • Spend an hour or a whole evening tech free.
  • Go Christmas shopping for a family in need.

If you have kids, you can easily tailor your  ideas to incorporate your whole family. These small ways of spending time together will bring us closer during a crazy and hectic season.

I hope you take the time to create your own advent calendar complete with activities for yourself or your family to relax and slow down during the holiday season. What would you include inside of your advent calendar bags?
