Farmstand: Asparagus

farmstand logoI was planning on heading out to Terrain for a farmers’ market event last night, but an early summer thunderstorm scared me off from making the trek out of the city. Luckily for me, in Philadelphia you can find a farmers’ market happening almost everyday of the week in different parts of town. The Food Trust of Philadelphia makes it really easy to locate where and when markets are happening. They also do a really fun event called Night Market. I went to the first one of the summer last week and stuffed myself with treats from a few of Philly’s finest food trucks.

With guidance from The Food Trust, I headed down to the Fairmont Farmers’ Market and picked up a nice bunch of asparagus. I was specifically looking for asparagus thanks to this handy guide that lets me know what’s in season in Pennsylvania. It’s best to keep it asparagus cold and covered. So when you get asparagus home from the market, make sure to wrap it up and refrigerate it. Plan to use it within 2-3 days. If you want to keep it extra crisp, trim the ends and place standing up in a glass of water or wrap the ends in a damp paper towel.

So many asparagus recipes have popped up in my Pinterest feed recently and these are the ones I can’t wait to try. Most of these are pretty simple because asparagus is already so good on it’s own. Also, it’s the start of grillin’ season!
