The holidays are all about traditions that have been created with family and friends over the years. As children, my brother and I always woke up before my parents. We couldn’t wait to run down the stairs to open our gifts, but my dad would make us wait at the top until the video camera was “ready” to go. When we were finally allowed to go, we would race down the stairs and start opening the presents. This simple tradition sticks in my head each holiday season.
I am writing this blog post from my friend’s apartment in Chicago. I’m here for the next few days to celebrate SLAPR (an acronym made from all five of our last names) Christmas, a tradition we developed around 10 years ago when we were freshmen in college. Each year we get together to celebrate the season, exchange presents and share a meal.
We typically plan to make dinner, but this year we will go out to eat so we don’t have to worry about cooking or cleaning up. After dinner we will make our signature champagne pomegranate cocktails and share secret Santa gifts. If we are feeling up to it, we might even decorate cookies and watch our favorite holiday movies, Love Actually. I look forward to this event every year – I’m so happy I could make it to Chicago to celebrate with Charlotte, Marcela, Stefanie and Kristen!
The above photos are from the last four SLAPR Christmases. As you can see, I couldn’t make it to last year’s so I Skyped in. Not matter how busy the season is, we make sure to make time for each other and celebrate our friendship.
What’s your favorite holiday tradition? What new holiday traditions have you created with your significant other or friends?
