This weekend I spent a lot of time planting a herb garden in my backyard. I will be sharing all of the details about my garden on Wednesday. (Below is a little sneak peek!) I’ve been wanting to plant a garden for a long time, but we don’t have too much sun in our backyard, so I figured out a compact solution.
My favorite part of the process was deciding on what type of herbs to plant in my small garden. I decided to go with a cocktail themed garden, meaning that the herbs will be super tasty for summer cocktails (I can also use them for recipes). I picked up the herbs at my local farmers’ market, but starter herbs are also sold at hardware stores and even Trader Joe’s has a great selection to start a garden.
Cocktail Herb Garden Suggestions:
Basil, Lavender, Lemon Verbena, Mint, Rosemary, Sage
Italian Herb Garden Suggestions:
Basil, Chives, Fennel, Oregano, Parsley, Rosemary, Thyme
Culinary Herb Garden Suggestions:
Basil, Fennel, Cilantro, Dill, Rosemary, Sage, Taragon, Thyme
If you are just starting to garden, limiting the amount of herbs will make it more manageable to care for. Selecting herbs that you like and will use will also make the garden more fun and useful. I selected basil, lemon balm, mint and sage for my cocktail themed garden. I’ve already used the mint in a recipe. See you all Wednesday for how to plant a herb garden!
